Istanbul

I recall one incident when we were waiting at the gate of the Ayasofya mosque, one of the security guards asked us - which country we were from. I responded “India”, but they kept asking as if it did not register. Then one of his colleagues asked “Hindustan?” – I said yes. Then they all understood. It could be an isolated case but I think Hindustan had a historical significance way back in Turkish history.

Turks invaded India many times in medieval history, possibly some of their cultural and linguistic aspects became prevalent in northern part of India. It is believed by some historians that it was the central Asian invaders who coined the word ‘Hindu’ as they could not pronounce ‘Indus’.
The city of Istanbul is one of the most beautiful and historically interesting.

Napoleon had once said that “If earth were a single state Constantinople (old name of Istanbul) would have been its capital”
