There were a number of things that fed into this book, but I think that my most immediate issue was that I was getting tired of cuddly werewolves and noble vampires. That isn't to say that I don't ever like reading about those, but it seemed like every book I picked up was filled with beautiful, noble, caring creatures of the night. I wanted to put some fear back into the night. I wanted a world filled with monsters who were ugly, selfish, and frankly, a little bit disgusting. I didn't want to turn it into a horror, but I thought it would be fun to have a world with a bit more grit in it.

My first challenge was figuring out how to write a protagonist engaging enough to make the reader feel connected to him, but who also made you cringe from time to time.(less)
