I'm lucky, I don't really get writer's block. But there are a lot of things I do that I'm pretty sure would help people who suffer from it.

The biggest thing? Movement. I teach a workshop called Body of Writing that combines yoga, meditation, music, and visualization with writing exercises. It's designed to boost creativity.

Our bodies hold our stories, they have a wisdom of their own that doesn't make the most logical sense to our minds sometimes. When you dance and sing and practice yoga postures, you inhabit your body in a totally different way, and that helps you inhabit the bodies of your characters.

But you don't even have to go that far. Just put on some music and dance, or go for a walk. Repetitive movement helps. Walking, swimming, sweeping, cleaning. Or you can try rearranging your furniture. I'd rather dance.(less)

KIDDING.
The best thing about being a writer is of course—the writing. You can write the story *you* want to read. Or you can write the story you *need* to write. Sometimes they're one and the same. Either way, writing is something I need to do. When I don't write, I'm not happy.(less)

“Six guys. Six girls. Two guides who treat the term lightly. Add a complete lack of civilization, and even with the daunting distance we’ve trekked, there’s been plenty of time to—”
Mimi Cross, Before Goodbye

“Words are three-dimensional. But we pretend they’re flat. Why? Why don’t we say what lies beneath our words? Why is everything such a secret?”
Mimi Cross, Before Goodbye

“Singing with a band is trampolining with your breath. A sound you make that makes you too.”
Mimi Cross, Before Goodbye

“If only you’d remember before ever you sit down to write that you’ve been a reader long before you were ever a writer. You simply fix that fact in your mind, then sit very still and ask yourself, as a reader, what piece of writing in all the world Buddy Glass would most want to read if he had his heart’s choice. The next step is terrible, but so simple I can hardly believe it as I write it. You just sit down shamelessly and write the thing yourself. I won’t even underline that. It’s too important to be underlined.”
J.D. Salinger, Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters & Seymour: An Introduction
