Diving deep — with love and awe (and, sometimes, ire) — into the unquenchable ocean of abstraction and interconnection is my work and my abiding passion.

If you have read my writing, you’ll have a feel for the sort of subjects that hold a fascination for me: empathy, personal identity, life and death, neuroscience, neurophilosophy, technology, artificial intelligence, the singularity, transhumanism, transformation, and transcendence.

Self is an illusion. Our egos hold us in the iron grip of our own inner narratives, but meditation can help to release us from it.

Persons are indeterminate. We are not fixed entities over time, but sequences of fleeting perceptions -- 'series-persons' consisting only in certain connections and continuities. This is a source of wonder.

You are not your fault. We do not really have 'free will,' so the way you happen to be is purely a result of the chain of cause and effect.

I do at least know that I don’t know, and perhaps I know something of another way of not knowing. Curious minds like ours stay open to the new questions that emerge from our original ones,’ I venture. This probably isn’t hel Read more of this blog post »

“The passage of time and the action of entropy bring about ever-greater complexity – a branching, blossoming tree of possibilities. Blossoming disorder (things getting worse), now unfolding within the constraints of the physics of our universe, creates novel opportunities for spontaneous ordered complexity to arise.”
D.J. MacLennan, Frozen to Life: A Personal Mortality Experiment

“So much time spent believing
we had ghosts in our machines has accustomed us to haunting
ourselves.”
D.J. MacLennan, Frozen to Life: A Personal Mortality Experiment

“The pulse of lapping water; slow waves invisible in the dark; two entangled minds; two lives; two beating hearts.”

Paul Broks

“Your name may be 'writ in water', but for now, you have the great advantage of being a wave that can think.”
