Sarah Jude lives by the woods and has an owl that lands on her chimney every night. She grew up believing you had to hold your breath whenever you passed a graveyard or a bridge spanning water. I live near the Missouri Ozarks, so it's something I run into quite a bit. There are mountains, foothills, winding narrow roads through woods, and it can be an incredibly unsettling place, especially in the more remote areas where you have no easy way out and there's no one around.

In terms of the actual story, I wanted to touch on that age when you realize that you and are very closest friend are growing apart, that you can't keep going the way you always have because you've both changed, and the consequences of keeping secrets.(less)
