When Life Locks the Door… and Opens a Conversation

Dear Reader,

This week’s note comes from Home For Good. It is a story about a soldier’s return to his hometown and his reconciliation with the person he left behind. It also explores realizing that maybe love never really left. Perhaps, it was just waiting for the right moment to bloom again.

In this scene, Katie and Brock find themselves accidentally locked in a shed together. What begins as frustration turns into a quiet, uninterrupted, unplanned conversation that has the potential to fi...

Remember to Live

Dear Reader,

My love of the UK started seven years ago when I attended a writing conference. Don’t get me wrong, Scotland, London, and all the cities in between are great. But I love this place because of the friends I made.

Over Zoom and Messenger chats, we’ve shared the highs and lows of life after 40.

Grandchildren have joined families. There were a couple of health scares. And we’ve had discussions about important things like—does taking Biotin really reduce hair loss?

Once a y...

The Art of Finding Your Voice: A Second Chance Story

☕ Grab a warm cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa, and let’s chat. Today, I want to tell you a story about second chances—the kind that help you rediscover something you never realized you lost.

Losing—and Finding—Your Voice Again

When I moved to Montana, I walked away from everything I had known. My husband’s mother and sister had passed, and the family needed someone at the farm. We left behind friends and familiarity. We also left the sense of security that comes with knowing exactly where you fit in t...

Finding Hope in Second Chances: A Montana Tale

Pull up a chair, grab a warm cup of coffee, and let’s chat. Today, I want to tell you a story about second chances—the kind that takes grit, heart, and a whole lot of determination.

Something I’ve said to my children when they stress out is that adults are just as confused as they are. We’ve learned that not knowing comes with living. We know the road ahead is paved with uncertainty, but the only way to travel is to take it one step at a time.

And when I’m really stuck, I think about others who to...

The School Library

I am one of those people who have the good fortune to live in a world that is true to my purpose. When I’m not writing stories, I am a school librarian.

I’ll let that sink in.

My day revolves around sharing the love of reading.

And I mean the love of reading.

I remember the first time I asserted this.

The first time kids met me, they challenged me. Yes, challenged. One approached me with a well-known title and said, “I’ve read this. I challenge you to find a book I like.”

T...

Celebrating Women

This blog should appear either late on International Women’s Day or early the next morning. That’s okay because celebrations should last longer than the day assigned to them.

And with that in mind I share a couple of stories and some thoughts on International Women’s Day and Women’s Month.

Earlier this week, I had a class of girls in the library. The lesson was about recognition of women’s accomplishments. I told them how, within my lifetime, things taken for granted today weren’t a p...

I Love….Love

 Hello, Reader Friends

Merri, why do you love writing about love?

This week’s post was prompted by a discussion with my close friend Desiree. Thanks to her suggestion, I’ll share a different glimpse of the other side of the computer.

It starts with a question: Of all the genres, why romance?

I’ll answer the question and share four sweet romance reads that have held my heart long after the last page has been turned.

The Magic of Love Stories

For me, love is a language tha...

Characters Who Inspire

In the world of fiction, there are characters who, like beacons, shine a light on the power of uplifting words. They remind us that the right voices can indeed transform cages into open skies. Here’s a list of such characters that come to life on the pages of some of my favorite books, embodying the essence of inspiration and encouragement:

Elizabeth Bennet from “Pride and Prejudice” – Her sharp wit and refusal to bow to societal pressures make her an inspiring figure, as she looks beyond...
