My review of the BestsellerBound Short Story Anthology
Bestseller Bound Anthology by Darcia HelleMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
One of my short stories is featured in this collection, 'Flames'. My review does not include that story.
This is a diverse collection of stories, there's something for everyone in this anthology.
Wish Upon A Star by Lainey Bancroft
An insightful tale about a gifted singer who falls prey to the ravages of fame. Lainey is an author who understands the human psyche well.
Tears For Hesh by J. Michael Radcliffe
An entertaining fantasy tale, containing wizards, magic, curses, and spells. Hesh is a likeable character and I felt compassion for him. Well written with a tragic twist.
You Can Call Me Ari by Darcia Helle
A chilling, suspense story to keep you on the edge of your seat. By far the most vivid story in the collection. The descriptive quality of the writing pulls the reader in. Fans of Darcia's writing can be assured that even though this is just a short story it is just as scary as her novels!
Minor Details by Jaleta Clegg
A humourous tale about two teenage girls, one of whom can't spell. This leads to an unfortunate turn of events (or, fortunate, depending on how you look at it!) A fun read.
Ice Cream Man by Neil Schiller
Having read and enjoyed Neil's collection of short stories Oblivious, I was not disappointed by this story. It contains the same moody feel as much of his writing. It is in essence a poignant story of disappointment.
No Eyes But Mine Shall See by Sharon E. Cathcart
Sharon Cathcart sets the scene well in this heartbreaking story of a love denied. I liked the descriptive quality of the writing. Much of the story is written in the form of a letter that will never be read, making it all the more heartrending.
The First Texas Twister by Magnolia Belle
A fun and entertaining tale about how the Wild West collided with Native American culture to create the first tornado.
Shadow Lantern by Gareth Lewis
An interesting concept. A short story told entirely through dialogue with no narrative. At first, I didn't think it would work, and must admit to being a bit confused as to which character was speaking at times. By the end, however, I found myself entertained by this fantasy tale.
Stained by Amy Saunders
I hadn't read any of Amy's work before this short story, but now I will be seeking out more of her writing. I was very impressed by the way the author deals with the main character's emotions after a traumatic event. The tale is enthralling and the ending is moving. All believable characters.
All in all, this is a great collection and a wonderful way to introduce readers to some very talented independent authors.

BestsellerBound is 1 year old!

Last year, Darcia Helle, Stacy Juba, and I, launched the message board BestsellerBound
In one year we gave accomplished so much that looking back on it, it's quite astounding. Here are just a few of our joint projects/successes that show what an awesome place it is:
1. Towards the end of last year we launched the BsB Cutting Edge campaign to try to get Darcia Helle's book The Cutting Edge to #1 in the Amazon kindle charts. We managed to get the book into the top 100, and were invited to The Indie Book Collective (IBC) to take part in a radio show talking about the campaign. Our original campaign inspired IBC to run their own series of campaigns to get indie authors into the top 100. I have noticed other websites doing a similar thing. BestsellerBound was the first website to do this; it's great to know that others are following our lead.
2. At the end of last year, Jason McIntyre and I wrote the online novella, Cutting The Fat, which started off as an online exercise in writing a novel together as a team and ended up as a successful book, now available on kindle.
3. One of our top members, Joel Blaine Kirkpatrick, put together the BsB Annual Sample Anthologies, including chapters from members' novels, and short stories. It's free to download and is very popular across the globe, this helps to spread the word about our members' books to all corners of the world
Here's a link to a Youtube video, made by one of our multi-talented members Magnolia Belle, introducing the anthologies:
You Tube trailer
4. We have published two short story anthologies containing top quality fiction in all genres from our members. Both volumes are available to download free at Amazon on kindle. Both are very popular having entered the top 100 downloads!

5. We were a top 10 finisher in the Preditors and Editors poll 2010 for best writers' discussion forum! (We came 4th! Not bad for a forum that had only been running for 2-3 months at that time!)

BestsellerBound continues to grow, with more members joining each month. We really do seem to attract the cream of the crop of indie authors.
We have also attracted quite a few readers of independent books, and they are valued members. We would love it if more readers would join, as our original intention was to create a forum where indie writers could chat to their readers. We're a bit top-heavy with authors at the moment. This is not necessarily a bad thing as most authors also love reading. But if you're just a reader and not a writer and wondered whether you could join, please do! We would love to welcome you.
As we are now celebrating our 1st Anniversary, we decided it would be nice to have a blog hop where we give away some prizes donated by our members. Here is a list of what you could win:
1. 1 coupon code for a free ebook copy of The Dream, my latest novel, from Smashwords.

Descent of Blood by Elizabeth Marx is free on Amazon at the moment, and I'm not sure for how much longer, so all you vampire fans should grab a copy now!
England, 1465. Mortal men clash in the War of the Roses for the English crown, while vampire warriors' move undetected among their ranks, savoring the flow of blood that battlefields provide. Vampire prince, Severian Pearce, fears the revelation of the immortal clans to humankind should King Henry fall from power. While in pursuit of Henry's enemies, Severian comes to the aid of Meridian Neville, a human woman he craves, and not for the scent of her blood. Meridian is torn between honoring her father's dying wish and her unexplainable yearning for Lord Severian. But as Severian and Meridian work together to protect a relic hunted by mortals and immortals alike, the red veil descends over them.
This all-consuming attraction can drive immortals to the brink of madness. Will the existence of this powerful bond between a human and a vampire be enough to unite the immortal clans or is the red veil a scourge set on destroying any chance they might have of happiness?
When all hope is lost, one vampire will fight unto death for his forbidden love.
Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Descent-Blood-V...
Another Elizabeth Marx book, is also currently free, Cutters vs. Jocks.

On the idyllic campus of Indiana University, Little-Libby-Nobody clashes with Band-Aid All-American-Athlete and fireworks explode, spiraling Libby and Aidan into a collision course of love at first sight versus lust you can't fight. Libby believes superstar jocks don't take cutters to Rose Well House, at midnight and pledge their undying devotion beneath its sparkling dome. And Band-Aid imagines there's no place in the major leagues for a small-town waitress. As the game plays out and their affection grows, they realize that labels like cutters and jocks can't extinguish what's between them.

Regina Puckett's The Magic of Snow is free on Amazon until 4th July 2013! I haven't read this one either, but it sounds like an interesting twist on a fairy tale.
In our beloved fairy tales of old, Prince Charming always saves the damsel in distress. In our modern world, sometimes the damsel has to find a way to save her prince.
When Sarah White meets the ruggedly handsome Staff Sergeant Charlie Prince, she discovers a man with a pure heart hidden underneath his warrior façade. Before Charlie leaves with his unit for Afghanistan, he promises to stay in touch, but after nine months of exchanging letters and emails, he stops writing. When the letters stop coming, Sarah waits in agonized suspense, not knowing if the man she had fallen in love with has been killed in action or if he has just decided he is no longer interested in her.
Magic is real, but it’s not for the fainthearted or nonbelievers. It takes true love to release it and hard work and determination to keep it.

How Teddy Roosevelt Slew the Last Mighty T-Rex, by Mark Paul Jacobs, will be free on Amazon on 4th & 5th July.
Still stinging from his recent election loss, former president Theodore Roosevelt sought refuge in the Brazilian jungles in early 1914 on an expedition to trace the last unmapped Amazonian river system, the Rio da Dúvida or The River of Doubt. Co-commanded by famed Brazilian explorer Colonel Candido Rondon and staffed with Roosevelt’s 24-year-old son Kermit, naturalist George Cherrie, and more than a dozen local porters and laborers, the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition was plagued by disaster from its very onset—incompetent planning and inadequate outfitting would result in near mutiny, hunger, death, and even cold-blooded murder. But Roosevelt meets an odd stranger along his ill-fated journey, who tells an astonishing tale that could challenge the very core of modern Natural History. Weakened by illness and starvation, Teddy Roosevelt is caught in a web of unfathomable danger, the results of which would alter his life and the lives of his companions forever.

Can't Live Without by Joanne Phillips, is available free on Amazon until tomorrow, so hurry if you want this one. I haven't read it yet, but it has loads of great reviews and looks like the type of thing I would enjoy!
Stella Hill is proud of the home she's created for herself and her daughter. She's worked hard to buy the very best of everything ... But when she wakes one morning to find her kitchen on fire, Stella knows her life will never be the same again.
At least she has Paul to lean on: Paul Smart, owner of Smart Homes, confirmed bachelor and unknowing recipient of a schoolgirl crush Stella never quite got over ... When the charismatic John Dean turns up after sixteen years, Stella is determined not to fall for him again. Because now her heart belongs elsewhere. Or does it?
With a boss she's half in love with, a teenage daughter about to go seriously off the rails, a spendaholic mother, and a house to rebuild, Stella's problems are only just beginning.
Can Stella put her life - and her home - back together again? And will she ever realise just what it is she really can't live without?

New releases by talented independent authors
You probably hear about the new releases from the big publishing houses, but you may miss announcements from independent authors about their new books. I've heard about a few new releases from some of my favourite indie authors in the past few months, so I thought it would be nice to promote them here.
I haven't read any of them yet, but I know that these authors usually write stuff that I enjoy. I hope you'll find something in the list to add to your to-read lists.
Maisie - by Julie Elizabeth Powell

About the book:
Maisie is special. Yes, she is blind, yes she’s an orphan and yes, few know her roots. But inside, she sparkles, more than an angel, more than those majestic stars that layer the universe in glory. Some see this sparkle while others deny its existence and insist she is nothing more than a brat, one that even her own parents didn’t want.
Maisie also has a secret. One she’d never share because if she did, she knew they’d lock her away in one of those places the others talked about - where all the weird people go.
Even Maisie doesn’t understand it all, but knows that one day she’ll meet the woman and the boy...those that she believes are part of her dreams, in a land where she can see, where colours are vibrant and the moon shines as bright as the sun.
What is the truth, and will Maisie ever find it?

Femme Fatale, by Dominic Piper

About the book:
When private investigator Daniel Beckett foils an assault on a young girl in London’s West End, it leads to an offer of work from a sinister and unlikely source in Soho’s Chinatown.
But what starts out as a straightforward missing persons’ case soon takes on a more ominous aspect as he discovers a trail of blackmail, sadistic violence, conspiracy and murder, plus an influential, privileged and poisonous presence that seems to permeate all spheres of society.
The perpetrators, however, are not expecting to encounter an individual like Beckett; an intelligent, amoral and fearless individual with a skill-set that points to a covert and violent past.
Acquiring an entrancing and mysterious female associate, his investigation leads him into London’s electrifying burlesque scene where it seems some of the answers may lie.
But no one is as they seem, and the truth is unexpected and disturbing.
Femme Fatale is the third novel by Dominic Piper featuring private investigator Daniel Beckett.
