Arthur Swan was raised in North Carolina and now resides in Los Angeles. He has contributed to films ranging from 'A Beautiful Mind' to 'How to Train Your Dragon'.

On weekdays, he rises before the sun and starts writing, followed by a swim at one of his favorite outdoor pools in LA, followed by a big breakfast, more writing, and then his day job.

He volunteers for Young Storytellers, enjoys fishing and fireworks with his favorite niece and nephew, and on weekends he can be found hiking high climbs in early fog before the sun burns through as mist vanishes to blue sky, or otherwise, he's probably trying to write.

His first novel, Before the Sun Hits, won the Reader Views Reader's Choice Award.

There is only wind and rain, and something else—a low howl, maybe, a snapping—probably just wind in the trees, probably nothing at all—so you go out into the storm to find her.(less)

Arthur Swan’s Nine Favorites of 2023

Dear Readers,

If you’re looking for reading suggestions, aside from LA FOG, of course, here are my top favorite novels from those I read in 2023:

9. The Last Word – Taylor Adams. A unique cat-and-mouse thriller in which an author targets a woman living in isolation for leaving a much-deserved, one-star review.

8. Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon – Malcolm Gladwell. Not only candid po

“The truth is life is full of joy and full of great sorrow, but you can't have one without the other.”
Andre Dubus III, House of Sand and Fog

“Lester wanted to rise up out of this like a cloud, to drift over the valley and shore to the Pacific, to dissolve into its huge green expanse like rain.”

Carol Rifka Brunt
“I really wondered why people were always doing what they didn't like doing. It seemed like life was a sort of narrowing tunnel. Right when you were born, the tunnel was huge. You could be anything. Then, like, the absolute second after you were born, the tunnel narrowed down to about half that size. You were a boy, and already it was certain you wouldn't be a mother and it was likely you wouldn't become a manicurist or a kindergarten teacher. Then you started to grow up and everything you did closed the tunnel in some more. You broke your arm climbing a tree and you ruled out being a baseball pitcher. You failed every math test you ever took and you canceled any hope of being a scientist. Like that. On and on through the years until you were stuck. You'd become a baker or a librarian or a bartender. Or an accountant. And there you were. I figured that on the day you died, the tunnel would be so narrow, you'd have squeezed yourself in with so many choices, that you just got squashed.”
Carol Rifka Brunt, Tell the Wolves I'm Home

Lee Child
“lawn. Yard work summed up the whole futile procedure. First you spend a lot of time and money making the grass grow, just so you can spend a lot of time and money cutting it down again a little while later. You curse about it getting too long, and then you worry about it staying too short and you sprinkle expensive water on it all summer, and expensive chemicals all fall.”
Lee Child, Tripwire

Lee Child
“She looked away. Her name was Marilyn. Marilyn Stone. She had been married to Chester for a long time. She knew it all. She had no real details, no real proof, no inclusion, but she knew it all anyway. How could she not know? She had eyes and a brain.”
Lee Child, Tripwire
