I studied Sociology at York University, and was then a postgraduate at the Sheffield Centre for Psychotherapeutic Studies before coming back to live in York. Over the years, I have spent many pleasurable hours watching and getting to know some of the waterbirds at the York University campus. I became particularly fond of a lesser snowgoose named Blueberry, and when in 2012 I was diagnosed with breast cancer I decided to write a book about Blueberry and the rest of the campus snowgoose flock during my cancer treatment and recovery.

I had been a visitor to the campus for some time, watching the birds and getting to know some of them, particularly a goose called Blueberry. I came to know Blueberry extremely well, and became very attached to her. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I decided to write a book about Blueberry's life to help distract myself from the intense anxiety I was experiencing. I really wanted to share Blueberry's story, and also - at the risk of sounding a bit morbid - I was afraid that, if I was to die as a result of my illness, so many of the details of her life could be lost; how old she was when she built her first nest, how many goslings she hatched each year, and some of her many adventures during her lifetime. I thought it would be nice for anyone interested in reading animal stories to be able to read about the exploits of a little snowgoose flock which has been, to me, a goose mini soap-opera unfolding in front of my eyes.(less)

Spring

Spring is here, and the first tiny mallard ducklings have started to hatch at York University. Probably not long until the first Greylag goslings make an appearance too!
