A free novella in the Togas, Daggers, and Magic series is waiting for you at Aquae et Ignis.

I have always been fascinated by ancient Rome, from the time I was in primary school and first got my hands on Asterix. This exacerbated when my parents took me on a trip to Rome and Italy – I whinged horribly when they dragged me to “yet another church with baby angels on the ceiling”, yet was happy to skip all day around ancient ruins and museums for Etruscan art.

A few years ago I randomly picked a copy of a Lindsay Davis’ Marcus Didius Falco novel in a used book fair. I fell in love with Rome all over again, this time from the view-point of a cynical adult. When I decided to sit down and write a novel, the setting was clear in my mind.

Second (and third, and forth) books for Felix the Fox.
I wrote Murder In Absentia from start to finish, knowing the end but not sure how to get there (over-plotting kills the fun for me). As I was writing I constantly had more ideas for future novels. So I wrote them down, and now it's time to write the novels.

I have some pretty exciting directions to exploring the various aspects of the fantasy-Roman culture at Egretia. I've since published In Numina, and am working of the next books in order.

After that... I have more ideas for other worlds.(less)

Both are hard, but for different reasons.

Being an author is the ultimate introverted activity. You sit for hours struggling to keep putting works on paper, often afflicted by self-doubt about their worth.

Marketing is a very extroverted activity - putting yourself out there, reaching out to people. No wonder then that a lot of authors struggle with the required marketing after publishing.

Each author, each person, have their own unique composition, strengths and weaknesses. So play to your strengths, and excel at what you do best. Then learn just enough to get by with other aspects, and use (pay) other people to do the bulk of work in areas where you struggle. (You need to learn the basics, to be able to recognise what works and what doesn't, even if you aren't capable of coming up with it or executing it yourself).(less)

Book Review: How Chance and Stupidity Have Changed History: The Hinge Factor, by Erik Durschmied

This looked like a bit of fun for those seeking confirmation bias that many celebrated successes (or failures, depending on which side you’re on) in the past have more to do with human stupidity and dumb luck.

What to Expect

Recounting of select battles from history (mostly the last thousand years), and how how small factors have affected the outcomes. These range from the weather to bad communicati

Topics Mentioning This Author

“A childhood without books – that would be no childhood. That would be like being shut out from the enchanted place where you can go and find the rarest kind of joy.”
Astrid Lindgren

“Never practice magic when you're drunk.”
Assaph Mehr, Murder In-Absentia

“Writing is thinking. To write well is to think clearly. That's why it's so hard."

(Interview with NEH chairman Bruce Cole, Humanities, July/Aug. 2002, Vol. 23/No. 4)”
David McCullough

“Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.”
Winston Churchill

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
