She is the award-winning author of historical fiction, including the Henrietta and Inspector Howard series, The Fallen Woman’s Daughter, and The Merriweather Novels. Cox also pens the wildly popular, “Novel Notes of Local Lore,” a weekly blog chronicling the lives of Chicago’s forgotten residents.

She lives in the northern suburbs of Chicago with her husband, an assortment of children who continually leave and then come back, and one naughty Goldendoodle. My favorite book as a child was probably Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott, but I loved all of her books and read them many times. And has it influenced my writing? Definitely. The character of Jo, especially, is interesting because she embodies the plight of a woman who wanted both a husband and a family and desired to have something of her own, her writing. The prose is beautiful and touching, which I can only hope to imitate. (less)

During that time, I usually try to focus on what I'm going to write the next morning. It seems to work!(less)

“Well, it wasn’t Sweet 16!”

Celina Abelli was born on August 18, 1898 in a small Polish village to Wera Pakulski and Olek Zuraw.  Celina says the family lived on a farm with beautiful fruit trees.  Besides farming, Olek worked as a carpenter and even built the house they lived in.  In addition, he cut and sold logs from a nearby forest and helped cut hay on local farms for extra money.  Wera, meanwhile, cared for their six c
