Todd Foley is a storyteller on Vancouver Island, Canada, where he lives with his wife and three feisty kids. He is the author of Eastbound Sailing, Mine, Charades, Park Dads, Mine, and Love, Or Something Like It. He's fascinated by people, but would be entirely content on a deserted beach with nothing but a book and a bag of chips. Connect with Todd on Twitter @toddfoleywrites. ...more

How a failed contest entry turned into my first screenplay

I saw a call for a contest for short horror stories, the only caveat being that it includes “Whatever you do, don’t turn around.” So, I wrote what I thought was a compelling story and entered the contest.

I didn’t win.

Not the end of the world. Yet as I thought back to the story, I thought, I’m proud of this. Why limit it to just a short story contest?

Could it be expanded to a novel?

Naw, that didn’t

Every time I finish a Ruth Ware novel, I decide it’s my new favourite of hers. Happened again with this one. She blends the dark mystery of Gillian Flynn with the sharp humanity of Liane Moriaty, yet with a voice fully her own.

By far the most impactful book I have read this year. “We have figured out how to add years to life, but not life to years.” Perfect to read as I fully detached from social media and approach my 40s in the fall.

“Your life AFTER Christ is not static or an end result. You are not suspended in grace above the fray of life. You are looking at God through a kaleidoscope. Your life moves, and the beads shift, and something new emerges. You are defining. Redefining. Figuring it out all over again. You are in motion, in transit, in flux. You will be sad. You will be happy. You will love and doubt and cry and rage, and all of it matters. You are human, and you are beloved, and this is what it is to be Alive.”
