I am very fortunate that my stories seem self-perpetuating in a most organic idiom; that I need never fret or frustrate my efforts for lack of imagination or direction. That said, it's a double-edged sword, in that certain planned elements or preconceived scenes or developments within my work on occasion require pruning, re-shaping, or adjustment to accommodate bursts of sudden inspiration that occur from time to time.(less)

The best part is easily the wonder and thrill propagated by not only creating and cultivating a world and the myriad denizens and histories within it, but seeing how these developments, particularly the unplanned ones that surprise and excite, can take root and further influence and sculpt other areas of the narrative and perspectives of personalities within. Establishing an idea, watching it grow and develop beneath the fingertips, and then finally, the quiet sense of contentment and pride at having completed what once was begun.(less)

The Road North

Liminal, transitory, the yawning horizon beckoning,
Purposeful strides and winter climes, carrying aloft,
Whisper-mute; ever urging onwards,
In the heart of Skaði’s wilderness
Three shadows coalesce, to redefine

Subliminal, unconsciousness, to transgress what is known, to see,
Wilful smile dreams worlds all nine; the raven, Be-Named-Not,
Ancient lute; the Skaldic musing prospers,
On the paths of snow and

Robert E. Howard
“I have known many gods. He who denies them is as blind as he who trusts them too deeply. I seek not beyond death. It may be the blackness averred by the Nemedian skeptics, or Crom's realm of ice and cloud, or the snowy plains and vaulted halls of the Nordheimer's Valhalla. I know not, nor do I care. Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content.”
Robert E. Howard and L. Sprague De Camp, Queen of the Black Coast

“Barbarianism is the natural state of mankind. Civilization is unnatural. It is the whim of circumstance. And barbarianism must ultimately triumph”
Robert E. Howard

“I think the real reason so many youngsters are clamoring for freedom of some vague sort, is because of unrest and dissatisfaction with present conditions; I don't believe this machine age gives full satisfaction in a spiritual way, if the term may be allowed. ”

“Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat & stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame crimson, and I am content"......Conan the Cimmerian.”
Robert E. Howard, Conan the Barbarian

Steven Pressfield
“War, not peace, produces virtue. War, not peace, purges vice. War, and preparation for war, call forth all that is noble and honorable in a man. It unites him with his brothers and binds them in selfless love, eradicating in the crucible of necessity all which is base and ignoble. There in the holy mill of murder the meanest of men may seek and find that part of himself, concealed beneath the corrupt, which shines forth brilliant and virtuous, worthy of honor before the gods. Do not despise war, my young friend, nor delude yourself that mercy and compassion are virtues superior to andreia, to manly valor.”
Steven Pressfield, Gates of Fire
