Marilyn Boehm was born in Kingston, New York in 1949 to Hungarian Holocaust survivor parents. She was conceived in a displaced persons camp in Bamburg, Germany where her parents waited for sponsorship to allow them to come to the USA. She was named after the naval ship, The USS Marlin Martin, which carried her parents and older sister to Ellis Island. The family moved to California when Marilyn was five years old.

She met and later married Wayne Medler, the second of her husbands, in 1985. Theirs was a rocky, alcoholic marriage filled with discord until they both sobered up.
