I also read several James Salter books: Light Years; A Sport and a Pastime; and his memoir. This year, 2021 I am behind in my reading due to the editing of my current manuscript. But I went on a Hemingway binge! I've read: The Sun Also Rises; Islands in the Stream; Across the River; and For Whom the Bell Tolls. I also read You Can't Go Home Again by the great Thomas Wolfe and that has now become one of the favorite books of all time.(less)

I have to get in the zone and ask the inspiration gods to sit down with me. Turn off all the distractions. Everyone has a creative process that fits them. Don't try to shoe-horn other author's methods and styles. Do what works for you. (less)

“She realized in an instant that being around him awakened her, stirring the sediment that had long ago settled at the bottom of her well. He made her feel a part of him, of something larger, and somehow more alive.”
Luna Saint Claire, The Sleeping Serpent

“He was part of her...like a tattoo”
Luna Saint Claire, The Sleeping Serpent

“How the sunlight reflected in his eyes when he said she looked wild and beautiful there on the beach. It was where they talked, confessing to each other their fears—and their dreams—unsure which would come to pass. That was before she knew the truth about him. About the drugs. And his brutality. Still, they were as eternal as the waves, enduring beyond her lifetime”
Luna Saint Claire, The Sleeping Serpent

“And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.”
Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore

“And as much as I’d like to believe there’s a truth beyond illusion, I’ve come to believe that there’s no truth beyond illusion. Because, between ‘reality’ on the one hand, and the point where the mind strikes reality, there’s a middle zone, a rainbow edge where beauty comes into being, where two very different surfaces mingle and blur to provide what life does not: and this is the space where all art exists, and all magic.”
― Donna Tartt, The Goldfinch”

“Because their shame is so much deeper and more agonizing, Extreme Narcissists will stop at nothing to avoid feeling it. In fact, almost everything they say and do is intended to avoid the experience of shame. The narcissistic defenses they mobilize against shame are so extreme and pervasive that they color everything about the person’s personality, relationships, and behavior, creating a kind of shell or armor against the threat of shame.”
Joseph Burgo, The Narcissist You Know: Defending Yourself Against Extreme Narcissists in an All-About-Me Age
