Kathleen Kathleen said: " Much is made of Emma’s meddling and snobbery—her character flaws. But Jane Austen’s best characters always have strong flaws. That is the beauty of her plots: the heroines realize their mistakes, become better people, and then, of course, get the guy ...more "

Kathleen is on page 5 of 327 of Indiana: "The only cheerful and attractive face in the group was that of a beautiful hunting dog, of the large breed of pointers, whose head was resting on the knees of the younger man."

Give me a dog in the first few pages of a story and chances are I'm going to like it. :-)

T.H. White
“The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.”
T.H. White, The Once and Future King

James Baldwin
“Don’t let it make you bitter. Try to understand. Try to understand. The world’s already bitter enough, we got to try to be better than the world.”
James Baldwin, Another Country

W. Somerset Maugham
“There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.”
W. Somerset Maugham

Kakuzō Okakura
“Those who cannot feel the littleness of great things in themselves are apt to overlook the greatness of little things in others.”
Okakura Kakuzo

William Saroyan
“When you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.”
William Saroyan
