Born and raised in New England, Jay Trott has a master’s degree from Columbia University in English Language and Literature. He is an accomplished author with six published novels and four books of commentary. He is also a composer, having written many pieces for voice that have been performed by choirs and soloists. He lives with his wife, Beth, in Sherman, Conn. They have four children and three grandchildren. He is an avid gardener and loves long walks in the woods.

A Roman Message in a Bottle

I find myself, at this late date, reading Cicero’s letters, which I am very ashamed to say I never bothered to look at before.

They are written with wonderful style and intelligence, as all acknowledge. Possibly more important, however, is their import. The ones I have been reading were written during the dissolution of the republic and the establishment of the dictatorship.
