I photograph interesting places that I find, especially ghost towns and abandoned buildings. It is interesting to think about the people that used to live and work in these places, and what life was like for them. For many of them, life was very difficult, which makes me feel grateful for how easy life is for most of us nowadays. Understanding the past helps me appreciate the present. I conducted a lot research about each location featured in my books, which is also something I like to do. For some of the locations in my books, I included historical photographs compared to present day photographs. (less)

"Wonderful fictionalized telling of the true story of one of the more colorful women of Idaho's history, Peg Leg Annie. She lived during the end of the 1800's into the early 1900's. So much tragedy to befall one person would be hard to make up and yet" Read more of this review »

I just finished reading May: The Hard-Rock Life of Pioneer May Arkwright Hutton by Mary Barmeyer O'Brien. I chose it for the rags-to-riches story of May Hutton, a determined woman who arrived alone in northern Idaho's mining towns in 1883.
