"Those who fail to study history are condemned to repeat it."
I'm reminded of this famous quote when I look at the way America is dealing with so many unstable countries around the globe today. The Vietnam war was managed from beginning to end under politically dictated constraints and guidelines which failed to address the true nature of the war, and the spiritual and military capabilities of our enemy and our ally. The consequence of this poor judgment was disastrous for the countries of Southeast Asia as well as the United States.
In "The Land of the Million Elephants" I look at the war in Laos waged by the CIA, concurrently with the American military efforts in Vietnam. Although most of my characters in the book are fictional, they operate in a time and place that was very real. A time where the paradox of American foreign policy made it difficult to see a clear victory for freedom on the horizon.

A Good Story to Read on Veterans Day!
My book "The Land of the Million Elephants" is an action novel and spy mystery, but it also deals with many of the political and social conflicts in American and Indochina bred by the Vietnam war. As veterans of Vietnam we are proud of our service, but the memories of that time come with substantial dose of heartache. I hope I've allowed my characters bring forth that sentiment in the book.
