Mike Ferrara is a graduate of Syracuse University who then spent eight years as an Air Force Officer. After returning from duty in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, Mike earned a Masters Degree at the Air Force Institute of Technology and then served for five years in the military space program. Mike left the Air Force in 1979 to pursue a thirty year career on Wall Street.

After beginning his first novel in 1974 and having it rejected by a literary agent, he put writing on the back burner until his retirement when he wrote "The Land of the Million Elephants." ...more

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Michael Ferrara I served as an Air Force Officer in Ubon, Thailand from November of 1971 until November 1972 - basically the last year of the Vietnam War. Our mission…moreI served as an Air Force Officer in Ubon, Thailand from November of 1971 until November 1972 - basically the last year of the Vietnam War. Our mission was interdict the Ho Chi Minh trail and support CIA combat operations in Laos. That experience plus my travels throughout Southeast Asia allowed me to conjure up the fictional characters that operate within the historical context of that time frame.(less)

"Those who fail to study history are condemned to repeat it."

I'm reminded of this famous quote when I look at the way America is dealing with so many unstable countries around the globe today. The Vietnam war was managed from beginning to end under politically dictated constraints and guidelines which failed to address the true nature of the war, and the spiritual and military capabilities of our enemy and our ally.
