They're all set in the 1890s in New York City -- the era often referred to as the Gilded Age (and the last decade of the Victorian era).
It was a time when a lot was changing in American society: railroads were being built and the Western US was beginning to become urbanized; immigrants flooded the country, and New York in particular. The following decades would bring women's suffrage, widespread use of automobiles and electricity, and the First World War.
I wanted to write historical romances set in the United States, and considered several different eras before becoming fascinated with the Gilded Age. I still have a lot of research (and writing!) to do, but I'm excited to introduce you to this time period, and my characters who inhabit it.(less)
The Gilded Age of New York City comprises the late 1800s. The term was coined by Mark Twain, who considered the excesses of the days the “gilding” that covered up serious problems with the world! It’s an interesting time to set a book, because all that turmoil lends itself to high drama.
