Ever since she was young, Kyla Stan enjoyed creating fantasy stories. As a child, she used to fill up notebooks with fantastical ideas of mermaids and other ocean creatures, which were updated in her short story collection Ocean Song. Kyla knew at a young age that being a writer was her dream, so she pursued it at the young age of sixteen.

Kyla primarily writes for a young adult audience in the fantasy, horror, and contemporary literature genres. Some of the main themes within her work include mental illness, complicated family relationships, female empowerment, and environmental issues. She has a bachelor's degree in Communications, and a master’s in English and Creative Writing. Kyla is also an adjunct professor and teaches various levels

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your question. As a Latino woman, who is often "judged" because she isn't dark enough, I would say it's also offensive to consider someone not "native enough" because of the color of their skin. There are plenty of people, including myself, who have native blood, but their skin color also reveals otherwise. Everyone comes in a variety of colors with different backgrounds, and it's important to respect those differences.

Regarding the headdress, all I can say is it's revealed later in the novel, but I cannot give away any spoilers. My cover has been liked my several diversity groups, including a Native publication on Instagram. I was also nominated for the In The Margins award, a highly respected committee that celebrates diversity.

I hope this answers your question!(less)

Reading + Writing Update

Hi Readers! It's been a while since I've been on the blog, but I still have some books that I can't wait to share with you. Currently, I'm reading the 100 Series and WOW. It's a fantastic sci-fi/dystopian series. This summer has been quite heavy and full of challenges, but I'm still working on some projects including a video game script, finishing the last book in the Skin Walker series (tons of l Read more of this blog post »

“Violet, wake up! You are not in some pre-colonial, pre-internet hellhole. WAKE UP! But no matter how many times she rubbed her eyes or pinched herself to the point of almost bleeding, she was still there, on that same dirt floor, on the same animal pelt, still trying not to look at that one boy.
Was she a captive to these people?
Was she some sort of prisoner?”
Kyla Stan, Poet Tongue

“The morning sun filtered through the curtains and into Violet’s room, awakening her from dreams of wolves howling to a full moon. Her body felt different…changed somehow, but she was unable to pinpoint exactly what was new.”
Kyla Stan, Poet Tongue

“She smirked and felt the familiar pain of her fangs elongating and piercing through her gums. She inhaled the night air deeply and smiled at the intoxicating aroma. Multiple scents hit her nose at once. They were thick and rich, mixed with booze and teenage pheromones. Her leather jacket fluttered slightly as a night breeze swept under it.”
Kyla Stan, Poet Tongue

“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.”
Marilyn Monroe

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
Oscar Wilde

“You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth.”
William W. Purkey

“You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”
Dr. Seuss

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero
