TV, …moreI don't acknowledge it as a real thing. Writing is just like studying or working for me in that the hardest part comes before I ever get started. TV, YouTube, and Twitter are way more of a block for me than "writer's block" whatever the that is.

So to combat my personal hurdles, I try to put myself in a place where I can drown out my ADD thoughts and outside stimuli. That usually comes in the form of putting on headphones with an instrumental Pandora station and covering my monitors with my book file and book notes file.

If I hit a snag where I can't figure out the best way to get my character into the environment that I need them to be, I'll either re-organize and adjust my existing notes, or I'll just stand up and leave. You're a lot less likely to abandon your book for a long while if you quit right in the middle of a scene or even a sentence. Sitting down to a half-written sentence also makes the prospect of writing new material a lot less intimidating.

If you don't like that answer, I'll put it this way. Never force yourself to write for X minutes, whether that be stretching yourself thin, or making yourself stop no matter the circumstances. If the words are flowing out of you, don't stop for God's sake! If you're struggling with what should happen next, you're probably not writing the most exciting material anyhow. Stand up, walk the dog, and give your brain time to process.

You shouldn't feel guilty for not allowing yourself to write half-assed material. God knows you're not writing for the money, so unless you have a deadline or something else breathing down your neck, why stress yourself? If you do happen to have something breathing down your neck (spouse?), maybe you should take the day off from writing.

I promise, it's better to take your time and write three novels in which you gave it your all, and put the absolute best products out there that you could. If you start to slide into trying to complete three projects a year and find ways to go faster and faster and faster, your product will suffer.

Your readers aren't stupid. It doesn't matter how big of a hook you snagged them with way back when you released Billy Madison. They will spit the bit and run for greener pastures long before you subject them to The Cobbler. (less)
