I'm an author of the Hermeporta series which is a historical fiction adventure series through time following Professor Winston Sloane and all those that pursue him.

The first book is called: The Hermeporta Beyond the Gates of Hermes.

Beyond the Raging Flames is the second book in the series.

I have a background in the visual arts and studied graphic design at Camberwell College of Arts and had a fine art career for many years before becoming a writer. I love social history and current affairs, as well as eating delicious cakes.

I'm generally sweet, but my books can have some dark twists. But there's wit along the way.

But I think the biggest danger to writing is modern life with its constant demands on one's attention, and the need to juggle and make money until the books do well.

I think gone are the days when one could live on a shoestring in Paris, let alone London, and live off bread, cheese and wine as you crafted your masterpiece. I think finance and time demands are some of the biggest challenges facing creatives, and writers in particular, because writing is so time-consuming: it's one of the reasons why writing my first two books took so long - I always had to juggle writing with work, friends and family.

Still worth it all though.(less)

Writing is like being an actor, but you get to play every part - even the weather!

I really enjoy inhabiting the characters and then having them come to life and live out the story - often a character will surprise you and one must accommodate for this, but it's also thrilling when they do and act upon the stage you have given them. For me, the most satisfaction comes from the whole entirety of the project. It's exhausting, but one really feels a sense of achievement when the book is finished: a few weeks rest and then it's time to start another one.(less)

Hello Goodreads folk, this is my first blog entry here on this site so I'm going to keep it brief.

After being prompted by some questions on here (what advice would you give to aspiring writers?) I just wanted to write down the things that helped me and are essential.

Cultivate within yourself, discipline, determination, persistence and dedication. All are needed in order to get through the rigours Read more of this blog post »

“They won’t be playing this sort of music in 1611’ chirped Hermes, rolling his little eyes, ‘I know that’ Illawara huffed, ‘I’m not an idiot - but they’ll have drums or tambourines: there will still be a beat…”
