What what's the payoff?
"The Children Act,"like others such as "Chesil Beach<" is a book you so easily slip into and yet, almost from the start, I was feeling cheated. The book, though elegantly crafted, is scant. The story is petty much a short story and much of it is telegraphed well in advance. It's a "spoiler" for itself because as you read, you know what you will find at least a dozen pages ahead.
What draws you in is the very close-in third person narrative that allows you to feel you are getting a first person account, only more intimate because, as the writer, McEwan can give you the mind of the actor, perhaps more than the actor is conscious of. So it's deeper than stream-of-consciousness.
But, again, once you are drawn in, what do you get? Very pedestrian details of a marriage that is going downhill in the most cliche way.
What else do you get? Oh, well that's where I start getting mad. You get bits and pieces of stuff unrelated to the ongoing drama of the story. You get what we philosophy professors would normally teach in an Ethics class or a Bio-Ethcs class, lectures about the issue.
Why won't the author dramatize those issues as the backbone of the story? It seems utterly LAZY to simply lecture the reader rather than letting the issue come through as the plot progresses.
McEwan doesn't even bother to disguise what he is doing; he simply announces that he's going to serve up yet another lecture. How did the Children Act get to be passed? What do Jehovah's Witnesses believe and what are their communities like? And then, for some reason I still can't grasp, McEwan tosses in a couple of pages about geology.
Any writer can invent a character who is a geologist so he can lecture on geology, but what does that have to do with this story he's telling us here.
If you remove all this cut-and-paste lecturing on school subjects, the book collapses into what it really is: a short story.
Which means McEwan is cheating and the joke's on the dope who paid good money for this story that might have appeared in a magazine you already subscribe to. ...more "
