The short answer: I love ice cream.

The long answer: Like many growing up in the 1980s, I ate ice cream from the supermarket. I loved it. It wasn't until my 20s that I experienced artisanal ice cream. While in studying Pittsburgh, I concocted an idea to visit all nearby ice cream shops—we encountered dairy farms, roadside stands, and classic ice cream parlors. I was intrigued by the diversity of culture and styles of making ice cream. Then whenever I traveled, I enjoyed finding the local ice cream shop. Those shops were located in neighborhoods, often frequented by locals and rarely tourists. They captured the local produce and regional culture. What fascinated me the most was the ice cream maker—why ice cream and what kept the shop going. A friend suggested that I develop a map, but I took the idea further and thus created Ice Cream Travel Guide.(less)

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.”
J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

“Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.
"Pooh!" he whispered.
"Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw. "I just wanted to be sure of you.”
