"Breaking the Fall" is Lisa Sachs' first published book. Lisa Sachs was born and grew up in New York but has lived most of her adult life in the Chicago area. She was a social worker there for over 25 years working with children, families, the disabled, and other people at risk. After listening to everyone's stories throughout her career, she decided to write about some of them. By doing this, she found her own voice. Her experiences as a social worker still inform her writing. It's there in her stories and blogs. She is currently working on her second book. My great-grandparents came from Hungary in the late 1870's. When we were preparing for a trip to Eastern Europe, I began to search for my roots and wasn't able to find what I searched for. Who did they leave behind? Why did they leave their home? Are any of the descendants of those who stayed still alive? I hope to resume researching this mystery in the near future. I may even write a book about it. (less)

Growing up in New York, one of my favorite activities was visiting the United Nations. I loved watching the Security Council meetings or any other meetings so that I could press the buttons on the headphones to hear people speaking in all the official U.N. languages. There were six buttons – for English, French, Read more of this blog post »

I guess I'd give this 3.5 stars. It was a good read but not as great as others that she has written. It had a lot of magic and magic realism in it which is a departure for Julia Alvarez. I think it's good that she's branching out instead of falling i ...more

Lisa Thank You Darlene. Now I know what that's about. Trump himself probably inspired this. If he wins the election, it will be an unmitigated disaster.

Darlene Lisa,

Just read this article in the 'Huffington Post' and I thought you would find it interesting. I read a comment you made the other day wondering about this book and author and what was going on. This should help clear it up for you. I wasn't aware this was happening either.

Lisa Hi John, I just finished reading an excerpt of your book and found it quite amusing. Do you have a blog?

message 11: by Lisa

Lisa Hi John, You're welcome. I'll look forward to hearing from you. Some of my recipes are original. When they are not, I state where I got it. The fruit soup recipe was my great-grandmother's. She was from Russia and she lived with us in the summers when I was growing up. My mother, daughter, and I reconstructed her recipe after we came home from Door County with sour cherries. I just tried making it again and it came out delicious. I intend to read your blog tomorrow. It sounds good. I love political satire. Did you get to Second City when you were here? They aren't as cutting edge as they used to be. I attended the book festival. It's a great event. If you let me know when you're coming to Chicago again, I can point you in the right direction. My husband is a docent for the Chicago Architecture Foundation (volunteer) and we love playing tour guide.

John Cooker Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the friend invite! I think your website is a very interesting idea - except the recipes make me hungry..... And the recipes are tempting in themselves. Are they original?
Funny thing is, I was recently in Chicago for the Book Festival and ate at the Russian Tea Room of course! My grandfather immigrated from the Ukraine and there is no such food anywhere nearby me. I was so delighted to find traditional vegetarian dishes.
You seem like a political animal. You might enjoy (if you have a heathy sense of humor) my book excerpted at www.cureyourdemocracy.com. Other excerpts are on Authorsden.com. I satire partisanship.
Look forward to reading more of your blog.
John
