Therefore, the more it is seen, the better the chance some folks will read it. If they read it, the chances are some will resonate with what you wrote. If they resonate with what you wrote a lot, then they might rate the book or provide a rating, and that has ripple effects of visibility, interest, action, and review.

It is easier said than done. It seems genre is important. Some genres seem more in demand than others. If you are writing in a lower interest segment, then your hurdle is more difficult to overcome. Facebook, goodreads, blurbing and blogging all seem to help.

Everyone seems to be using the word platform, which is an overused term to describe how you make yourself visible and attractive to readers.

Watching for results is a lot like watching grass grow. If you watch too closely, you are likely to burn the stalk of interest just due to the attention you have placed in it. The entire process is likely to sap your energy and passion before your book really takes hold, so it is important to know why you are writing. Just having published is such a huge accomplishment. Don't let the later challenges steal that joy from you.

For me, having published was a big deal, and being read and having that book connect with folks in a meaningful way is a big deal. Also for me, results are in God's hands, as I feel He delivered the concept and a lot of the content to me.

Yet I want to do due diligence. I have been active in Goodreads, have listed a number of giveaways, have given away close to 600 books, have had a talk radio and blog interview, and have been active on Facebook, Goodreads, LinkedIn, and Twitter (to a lessor degree). I have a couple folks asking me to speak at Sunday School, men's groups, and women's Bible Study Groups, although that part seems to be slow in developing also, and some sideline factors are hindering that from really taking off to date.

Through all this, I am beginning to suspect that my next focus area for publicity of the first book is to get my next book out to the public. I am trying to decide whether my poetry book, or another Christian book, my children's books, or Christian fiction should take precedence.

Depending on where you are at in the process, any of these activities may help promote your book.

Another idea came when a friend introduced me to Andy Weir's short stories, which he makes available for free from his website. This seems a great way to give folks a chance to see your writing style and to connect with it, which can fuel the hunger for more. While I consider this option, I am wrestling with the concept of whether publishing in some genres will help or hinder sales in my primary genre. Since I have a lot of interest and have written in a number of vastly different areas, i have many open doors of action but some may help and others may hinder.

Anyway, that is a looong way of saying I am really not sure, but I sure hope you find some of this helpful and not too redundant of what you've found elsewhere.

Best of luck!!!

P.S. I got your note and will mail, your copy of my book in the morning. I hope you enjoy it.(less)

When they share thoughts like these about my writing, it is deeply moving, extremely gratifying, and makes me feel like I have touched something beyond myself, perhaps even beyond my life.(less)
