Benedict Patrick is from a small town in Northern Ireland called Banbridge, but has been living and working in Scotland since he moved there at the age of eighteen. Tragically, that was quite a while ago.

He has been writing for most of his life, and has been reading for pretty much all of it (with help from mum and dad at the beginning). Benedict's life changed when a substitute primary school teacher read his class part of The Hobbit and later loaned him the book – he fell in love with the fantasy genre and never looked back.

They Mostly Come Out At Night is his debut novel, and is the first novel in The Yarnsworld series.

Writing isn't easy (if it was, would it be worth doing?), but there's always a way to push through if you have goals to hit. It definitely helps me to have my stories planning in a decent amount of detail before starting on the first draft. Oddly, I also find that it helps if I don't have a lot of time in which to write - it means that I force myself to be economical in how I use my writing time. In other words, I quit worrying about what to write and just put words to paper. Some of them might even be worth keeping.(less)

We sailed through this one.

The book was excellent. I still can’t believe it is a debut novel.

However, I wouldn’t say I enjoyed a lot of this experience. The content of the book, domestic abuse, didn’t pull any punches, and a lot of it was difficult t

I’ve read a few progression fantasy fans compare the genre to a fast food hit, as opposed to the haute cuisine meal of a Robin Hobb trilogy.

I understand the comparison, and can agree with it for many books in the genre, but Tucker’s Immortal Great So

So, this was a surprise.

I was very unsure about Frozen River when Adele suggested we read it together. It is dense, well outwith my preferred genres, and covered a period of history I wasn’t really interested in reading about.

This ended up being one

Love loved.

I was a particular fan of the shift in POV to properly explore the big final act reveal. Perfect for Jade City fans, with some grim Bladerunner vibes thrown in.

Isako is a beautifully-flawed, compelling character; she is dedicated to how

Benedict Patrick is on page 11 of 448 of The Frozen River: Our latest buddy read. Although this is another thriller (not my preferred genre), the initial chapters have already grabbed me; there’s an edge to the main character’s narration that I want to find out more about.

“A story is a dangerous thing, Felton Herder. We must value them, we must be careful with them. Set one loose on the world, and you lose all control over your own creation.”
