The recent election and Grey Zone.
Grey ZoneWhen I wrote my novel Grey Zone, I had no idea the stunning parallels it was going to have with the nation's current situation. I initially wrote the story to be a metaphor for how the U.S. has treated Hispanics and African-Americans since the forties. I created the "Greys", which in my story are people whom are stricken with a mutation that without medicine, causes them to take on zombie-like symptoms;such as bashing human skulls open in order to eat the pituitary gland for the human growth hormone it produces. The greys are eventually rounded up and placed into modern concentration camps across america; the same as we did with the Japanese after World War 2, and our systematic round up of Blacks and Latino's in the fifties and sixties. Then the extremist, xenophobic, republican president contracts to have what I refer to as "the Dividing Wall" build around Baja California. This is where he ships (deports) all of the Greys to, locking them away so that they can no longer influence the citizens of the United States.
I wrote this story as a way to use modern pop culture to spread a message of tolerance to our modern youth; a way to show them how America has treated its immigrants, and through everyone's favorite monster; Zombies, show them that it's not right. It's not how things should be. Because someones skin color is different, because their culture and way of life is different, there is no reason to persecute and show prejudice. I sit here writing this right now, completely flabbergasted and astonished that only a few years after creating this fictional story, it's greatest concepts are coming to life in the nation around us. I can only hope that the message contained within Grey Zone, is one that reaches the hearts and minds of our youth, and before the Dividing Wall is brought to reality...
