Apparently, my great grandfather “kidnapped” my grandfather and took him away to raise far from his mother. My great grandpa was loved by his grandparents, so I don’t think he was a malicious figure. I would love to explore the story and motivations of such an act. (less)

Sound familiar? They're Nora Ephron's modern equivalent of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy. In both You've Got Mail and Pride and Prejudice, the attraction is beyond physical. There is a chemistry between both of the couples that evolves from a respect of the other's cleverness. In both stories, the characters grow as their destined lovers uncover the others' flaws or prejudices. I could watch Mail and read P&P over and over again and never become tired of the couples' dialogue.(less)

A Wicked Holiday is Coming!

I mentioned to someone (a few someones really) how excited I was that our kids were coming home this week. Yes, this week. Not next week when there is an actual holiday on the calendar.

Alex is still in Denver. Cole is now in Scottsdale. The kid who doesn't usually make plans without double or triple-checking with others went ahead and booked a flight for the week before Thanksgiving to save himsel

"I just took a trip to Moscow and New York and Hollywood all in the matter of a few days without having left my house . I waited in lines for rations in Moscow, with a kind man. I enjoyed the ambience of Hollywood and shook at its dark side in the 193" Read more of this review »

“All the world's a stage we're going through.”
Lorrie Moore, Anagrams

Richard Wright
“I was leaving the South
to fling myself into the unknown . . .
I was taking a part of the South
to transplant in alien soil,
to see if it could grow differently,
if it could drink of new and cool rains,
bend in strange winds,
respond to the warmth of other suns
and, perhaps, to bloom”
Richard Wright

Liane Moriarty
“Nick explained that an aperitif was an pre-dinner drink. Nick came from an aperitif-drinking family. Alice came from a family with one dusty bottle of Baileys sitting hopefully in the back of the pantry with the tins of spaghetti.”
Liane Moriarty, What Alice Forgot

Liane Moriarty
“A thank-you card,” repeated Alice. “Yes. I know, I know, it’s teaching them good manners and everything, but I sort of hate those thank-you cards. I always imagine the kids groaning and having to be forced into writing them. It makes me feel like an elderly aunt.”
