On the farm with Dad and his dog, Brut, looking out at the tractor disking the fields in the distance. Target hunting using Dad’s new rifle, a Ruger 22 Hornet. Look at the target, not too bad for my first time. My brothers are getting the fields ready for winter and next year’s crops– unloading and spreading poultry manure on the organic ground. Once the manure is spread, the ground is disked, and the furrows are set. Then it’s time for all of us to pray for rain!
At the conference with winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize who work to protect the planet. I am honored to work with these environmental heroes fighting to save our water, land, and air from pollution. As part of a California farm family and community, I understand that what we do to protect our local environment, has a global impact. Act Locally, Think Globally.
Nothing meant more to me growing up than my family, our farm and the community of Winters. I felt that again last Saturday when my cousin, Corinne Martinez and her business partner, Lynda Hinds, hosted my book signing at Rootstock in Winters, California. I am fortunate to have grown up with the values and traditions passed on to me by a large, loving family and a supportive, close-knit community.
