I live in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland with my husband. I like chocolate, whisky, my Kindle, massed pipe bands, long leisurely lunches, chocolate, going places in my campervan, eating pizza in Italy, summer nights that never get dark, wood fires in winter, chocolate, the view from the study window looking out over the Moray Firth and the Black Isle to the mountains beyond. And chocolate. I dislike driving on motorways, cooking, shopping, hospitals.

The lovely lady in my avatar is Archduchess Clementina of Austria (1798-1881), Princess of Salerno, painted around 1839.

NOTE: I read Regency romances as well as write them, and I review them all on my website, or you can find them right here on Goodreads on my real-name account at Pauline

As to being obliged to make corrections, I will always try to fix errors in my own books, and I've already corrected The Widow, but it's not always easy to do. Being self-published, I can upload a new version of an ebook or paperback very easily, but many of my books now have an audio version, and making changes to those once they're live is not easy (or cheap!). For any author with a regular publisher, there's no way they will agree to changes, unfortunately. In those cases, all an author can do is to learn from their mistake, and try to get things right in future books.(less)

I'm writing as fast as I can, believe me. In fact, there's a new one out today, Stranger at the Villa. And have you read all my novellas, which are free to subscribers of my mailing list? There's one companion novella for each series, and a stand-alone. If you don't have them yet, hop over to my website at marykingswood.co.uk to sign up. (less)

Review: Summer Campaign by Carla Kelly (1989)

A strange book, with some very unsettling mood changes, intermingling light-hearted banter with much more serious matters. Very enjoyable, despite that, although I wish the author had lightened the mood somewhat at the end.

Here’s the premise: Onyx Hamilton and her twin brother Gerald were abandoned at birth on the steps of a parsonage. The parson took them in and raised them, but when he died and

“You are a woman, swept by emotion, and therefore not rational.”
Mary Kingswood, Stranger at the Villa

“It was hard to remember a time when he had not been helplessly in love with her, yet he had only known her a few short weeks. Such a brief time, yet now his life was incomplete without her.”
Mary Kingswood, Lord Humphrey

“If you were married to a man nearer to your own age, a marriage of equals—” “There is no such thing!” she cried. “A woman is always less than a man in the eyes of the world, and nothing at all in the eyes of the law and the church. A wife does not exist in her own stead, she is the property of her husband, her only purpose to provide him with children, if she can, and to ensure his comfort. To be subsumed like that… it is horrible, Laurence.”
Mary Kingswood, Stranger at the Dower House
