I wasn't sure about it at first because of the fact that it's written in 1st person which is usually not my favorite, but that's because a lot of authors that do first person don't do it well. They do all tell not show, the character spends too much time brooding and whining and not in an introspective growth way, so it ends up being really tedious to read. That's not the case here. The author has an extremely unique style and writes the first person in such a way that it almost seems like two personalities. Each chapter starts with a journal entry of the MC Shen then gets into the chapter, which is told by Shen, and then within the chapter you have moments of Shen's inner critic/ego voice talking, which was very relatable, we all have that. Moments of doubt and moments where we say to ourselves, what are you doing? Come on! That's what the character does. So, it's almost as if the journal and the inner voice are one personality and the narrator voice is the Shen that the world sees. Again, extremely unique but not so jarring that it's uncomfortable to read. Quite the contrary, it's refreshing.

The characters and storyline other than the MC are also fantastic. They each have their own personalities with their own idiosyncrasies. Tamrin's got a giant heart, Jesma is tough and smart but seems like she is tied to her royal title expected way of behaving which is understandable. She reminds me of Princess Leia. Her brother Jesmir is the roguish royal boy who people assume is spoiled, I think there's a whole lot more to him though. I can't wait to see how he develops.

Now onto the world and story, it is vast and detailed, full of creative evils, monsters, magic, and spirituality. There's a section with a particular monster, I won't say too much except that my eyes were wide, I was gripping the book and holding my breath. That's how creepy and good the writing is!

But my favorite part about this book was 100% the humor. The snarky back and forth comments, the inner dark sarcasm of Shen, it's so delightfully dark and twisty. I laughed hard at some things and then thought, oh my gosh that's dark and I'm laughing at it, what's wrong with me? LOL I guess I just Get Sean Gregory. I'll definitely be happy to read everything this author has. You should give it a go too! ...more "
