Books Read 2017

One of the perks of writing books is getting a blog on Goodreads!

2017 was a good reading year for me. Perhaps because I considered it a year of rereading. Out of 108 books, 44 were rereads. About half of these were Shakespeare and though I had the goal of listening to all of his plays in Arkangel Audio editions in 2017, I only made it almost halfway. I will rename that bookshelf 2017-2018 and hop Read more of this blog post »

Audible was selling this for a couple of dollars one day and I could not pass it up. Once again it does not matter at all what C.S. Lewis is saying, he says it so well. These are mostly quirky science fiction stories, some not even completed.

First published in 1926 and recommended to me by Emily Raible, this is exactly the kind of outdoor book I love to read. While perhaps a niche book, nevertheless a bit of a staycation too.

The Life of Charlotte Brontë by Elizabeth Gaskell

This was a long book, full of many of Charlotte’s letters. It must have been a massive undertaking by Elizabeth Gaskell. Because it was written very close to her death. It leaves me longing to know more. What happened to her husband? Why did the Bron ...more

A short book with a few of Trotter’s beautiful paintings illustrating her point which is unless a seed falls to the ground and dies it will not bear fruit. Try that on as a self-help principle. It will change the everything.

I probably wouldn’t have bought this or ever read it. I haven’t read the author’s first book Humble Roots. I was tempted but it fell into a category in my mind of a group of Christian writers that have become too self-conscious to write well or, the ...more

Not sure how many times I have read this. Of course, it never grows old.

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." Wonder and mystery all wrapped up in such an ordinary sentence.

“I quote much scripture in this book. I do so intentionally, without references, because that is how I believe scripture should fit into the fabric of our lives. It is not tacked on; it is woven in.”
Cindy Rollins, Mere Motherhood: Morning Times, Nursery Rhymes, and My Journey toward Sanctification

“Once upon a time, I was learning about books, and now I have read so many of them. Once they were new worlds to be conquered, now they are old friends to be remembered.”
Cindy Rollins, Beyond Mere Motherhood: Moms Are People Too

“Every week I counsel young people from solid Christian homes who are undone by their sin. As parents, we are sometimes more invested in protecting our children from the sinful influences of this world than we are in preparing them for the deep sinfulness of their own hearts.”
Barbara R. Duguid, Extravagant Grace: God's Glory Displayed in Our Weakness

“[About the main character approaching death in old age, observed by her husband . . .] He saw that she had already laid down a large portion of her life long ago. Piece by piece she had given it away as she wrestled with existence, as her self was absorbed as nourishment into his life and the life of the children and the community. And laid down most piercingly, as she abandoned, one by one, the shapes of the dreams she had planned. Only to take them up again in other forms.”
Michael D. O'Brien, Strangers and Sojourners

“Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another "What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

“There is more reason to say grace before beginning a book than there is to say it before beginning to dine.”
Charles Lamb

“The question is not, -- how much does the youth know? when he has finished his education -- but how much does he care? and about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? and, therefore, how full is the life he has before him?”
Charlotte Mason, School Education: Developing A Curriculum
