In Spain, censorship and a shroud of secrecy blanketed most anything related to the Head-of-State for decades. This was only lifted well after the events described in the book were over and done. Even then, many of the key players never revealed their thoughts directly, leaving historians to put the poieces together after-the-fact. An obvious example is Franco, but there are others, as well. Torcuato Fernandez-Miranda never gave interviews or spoke openly about his role in the Transition. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 1980. His children found his diaries and hand-written notes with which they were able to piece much of his story back together, publishing the remarkable account more than 15 years later.
As for the USA, many Americans are unable to readily draw the distinction between Spain and the countries south of the Rio Grande. Several aspects of Hispanic culture, including language and history, are [unjustly] relegated to second-class status in the collective conscious. Had this same story taken place in Italy or France, it would have been a Hollywood movie decades ago. (less)

“Civilized existence is one which respects the law, both wise and good laws as well as bad laws, whose constitutional basis is the will of the people. When one does not like a particular law, the remedy resides in modifying it or revoking it by the procedures established for that very purpose. That methodology is the sole means of guaranteeing that popular will cannot be seized and held captive by zealots, with their own extreme interpretations.
-- Torcuato Fernández-Miranda”
W. Kristjan Arnold, The Reign in Spain: Fall & Rise of the Spanish Monarchy

“There are many who suppose a democracy cannot be tyrannical, by definition.  But of all its forms, the most odious type of tyranny is one propagated by a majority in sole possession of statutory power, giving it free reign to step on and humiliate the minority.  Those in the minority should always be afforded an equal right to express their views and have their liberty respected. ”
W. Kristjan Arnold, The Reign in Spain: Fall & Rise of the Spanish Monarchy
