I don't have a boss or someone I answer to, so I work on my writing as and when I feel like it, which may seem contradictory to advice you get about being regular and always doing X amount of work a day. But to me, that turns it into a JOB, and I write because I love to write. If I push myself to follow some schedule, I think I would occasionally be 'blocked' because I wouldn't be doing what I wanted to do. My challenge once I get started writing is quitting at a reasonable time and maintaining balance in my life. I think if you are able to treat writing as a passion, you probably won't experience writer's block that often. (less)

If you are an aspiring writer, it's good to do some research about best practices in publishing (choose traditional or self-publishing), to learn about the market and how to reach your readers and to polish your writing skills to make each book better than the last. But try not to accept a one-size-fits-all solution as author. Know yourself, your strengths and your weaknesses.
Try to find a way to write about something you love that inspires you to push through the boring bits like the many rewrites and proof reading. Be passionate. Make sure you have a market for your books, and research if there are ways to easily get your books in front of those readers. Then write with those readers in mind. But always make sure the subject thrills you. If you aren't passionate at the outset, you will only get less committed over time.
Bottom line: don't make writing a J.O.B. Approach it differently from a regular job and keep your enthusiasm fired up.(less)
