RUSH LEAMING’s first novel, Don't Go, Ramanya, a political thriller set in Thailand, was published in the fall of 2016 and (briefly) reached #1 on Amazon. His second book, The Whole of the Moon, based on his Peace Corps experiences in the Congo at the end of the Cold War, followed suit in summer 2018. The year 2021 saw the five-star reception of his Charleston, SC-set crime thriller Dead Tree Tales, and his very well-received collection of short stories, The Man Who Screams at Nightfall, came out in 2022.

His work has appeared in Notations, 67 Press, Lightwave, 5k Fiction, and The Electric Eclectic. He has lived in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Zaire, Thailand, Spain, Greece, South Carolina, England, and Kenya.

I often go months, sometimes years in between writing. I only write when I can't keep it inside anymore. And when that happens, I can write anywhere. It doesn't matter. When the story is gushing out, I can be sitting in the middle of a crowded football stadium, and it wouldn't stop me.(less)

I came close a few times to everything falling into place, but it never quite did. The best thing about returning to my "roots" and just being a writer is that I HAVE TOTAL CONTROL! I don't need millions of dollars or hundreds of people. I don't have to worry about investors, or completion bonds, or union contracts or weather delays. It's just me in a quiet room (or on my porch), spinning out tales on my own.(less)

Back to my roots

I'm kind of like James Ellroy in that I don't read a lot of contemporary writers, because, as he said, I don't want them to influence how I write. The past few years I've been forcing myself to expand my reading circle to present day.
