I'll never forget the F I received on an eighth-grade writing project. I had wanted to be a writer since the first time Mom put a crayon in my pudgy hand. When Mrs. Witte assigned our class an essay on the history of the State of Ohio, I filled a spiral-bound notebook with the stories of the state's settlers and other heroes. The big red F on the first page of my notebook was garnished with a note that accused me of plagiarism.

I pleaded with her. I tried to convince her I wrote the paper myself. Finally, I boldly asked her to prove her contention. She couldn't. My grade was revised to an A, plus an apology. I was a writer, and 40 years later I still am.

So far I've written more than 30 nonfiction books and discussion guides, hundreds of ma

It's a really long story, but it all started right after I became a Christian and found a great church. Some people about the same age as me invited me to their small group, and it was literally life changing. I wrote that story in an article I wrote for SmallGroups.com here: http://www.smallgroups.com/articles/2....

That transforming group and many others after it have developed a passion within me for the power of Christ-centered, authentic community, which had led me to write about small groups even early on in my Christian life, to lead groups, to write my Master's Thesis about group life, and to work in several churches leading the small group charge.

I've looked back and seen my life as a journey that God is directing, step-by-step. I have no idea where he's taking me next most of the time, and that's exciting! Today, writing blog posts, magazine articles, books, and studies about groups—not to mention speaking, teaching, training, consulting, and coaching about small group ministry—is where God has me on this winding path. Some people would call it a "calling"; I call it following. (less)

I save emails and web pages and am constantly writing notes to myself (on paper, my phone, or my iPad). I look out my back sliding door and see a dead tree leaning up against live tree and have several ideas about how that applies to life circumstances. These are all natural writng prompts. They are all I need. (less)

I May Be Wrong (and So Might You)

What is truth? It’s a vital question because truth is foundational for our faith, our lives, our small groups, and our churches.

But I want to approach the question, “What is truth?” by asking it another way: What isn’t truth? Truth is not my opinion (or yours), my stance (or those of my seminary professors or favorite theologians), or my feelings. As we study God’s truth in his Word, we must care

Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“Those who love their dream of a Christian community more than they love the Christian community itself become destroyers of that Christian community even though their personal intentions may be ever so honest, earnest and sacrificial. God hates this wishful dreaming because it makes the dreamer proud and pretentious. Those who dream of this idolized community demand that it be fulfilled by God, by others and by themselves. They enter the community of Christians with their demands set up by their own law, and judge one another and God accordingly. It is not we who build. Christ builds the church. Whoever is mindful to build the church is surely well on the way to destroying it, for he will build a temple to idols without wishing or knowing it. We must confess he builds. We must proclaim, he builds. We must pray to him, and he will build. We do not know his plan. We cannot see whether he is building or pulling down. It may be that the times which by human standards are the times of collapse are for him the great times of construction. It may be that the times which from a human point are great times for the church are times when it's pulled down. It is a great comfort which Jesus gives to his church. You confess, preach, bear witness to me, and I alone will build where it pleases me. Do not meddle in what is not your providence. Do what is given to you, and do it well, and you will have done enough.... Live together in the forgiveness of your sins. Forgive each other every day from the bottom of your hearts.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Charles Haddon Spurgeon
“There are times when solitude is better than society, and silence is wiser than speech. We should be better Christians if we were more alone, waiting upon God, and gathering through meditation on His Word spiritual strength for labour in his service. We ought to muse upon the things of God, because we thus get the real nutriment out of them. . . . Why is it that some Christians, although they hear many sermons, make but slow advances in the divine life? Because they neglect their closets, and do not thoughtfully meditate on God's Word. They love the wheat, but they do not grind it; they would have the corn, but they will not go forth into the fields to gather it; the fruit hangs upon the tree, but they will not pluck it; the water flows at their feet, but they will not stoop to drink it. From such folly deliver us, O Lord. . . .”
Charles Spurgeon

Eric Metaxas
“Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively doing God's will.”
Eric Metaxas, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“Christian community is like the Christian's sanctification. It is a gift of God which we cannot claim. Only God knows the real state of our fellowship, of our sanctification. What may appear weak and trifling to us may be great and glorious to God. Just as the Christian should not be constantly feeling his spiritual pulse, so, too, the Christian community has not been given to us by God for us to be constantly taking its temperature. The more thankfully we daily receive what is given to us, the more surely and steadily will fellowship increase and grow from day to day as God pleases.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Christian Community
