Epigenetics in science fiction

Epigenetics provides some satisfyingly meaty material for science fiction authors, such as non-genetic inheritance of the effects of temporary environmental exposures, and individual and species plasticity in response to external stimuli.

I have a guest post on Brigitte Nerlich's blog about two novels I read this year that make good use of the latter theme – The Power by Naomi Alderman, and Sevene Read more of this blog post »

Cath Ennis asked a question about The Suitcase Clone:
The Suitcase Clone by Robin Sloan
What exactly is the connection between The Suitcase Clone and the original Mr Penumbra book? I keep reading in reviews that there are characters in common between the two books, but no-one ever says exactly who they are and it's been so long since I read Mr Penumbra that I can't remember! The connection to Sourdough is so much clearer.

“If the DNA sequence is an instruction manual that explains how to make a whole organism from a fertilized zygote, then epigenetic information is a highlighted and annotated version of the text. Some molecular “colours” denote the parts of the text that need to be read most carefully, and others mark parts that can be ignored.”
