Hey Jarrod -

First, I fell in love with The Waste Land in college when one of my professors taught it. Since then, I have taught Eliot's work in my classes and have recently gained a new admiration for Four Quartets.

Regarding poetry, I remember being first attracted to it in high school. I admired Longfellow, Poe, Frost, Bradstreet, and all the Americans you typically read in high school. Then, I lived in Nashville for a few years during grad school and thoroughly enjoyed songwriting and lyric writing with a friend of mine there. I also happened to hear Billy Collins at a reading there and started working my way through his collections. Now I teach poetry and literature at a high school south of Atlanta, so somewhere in that journey, I developed a strong passion for poetry.(less)

"I read this book in high-school. It was the first sad book that I loved. I’ve never read it since, because I think I was worried it wouldn’t hold up. It did, and then some. 😭

I read it along with the Close Reads Podcast, and loved the rich discussion" Read more of this review »
