I’ve been a reader since the age of three, because my resourceful mom wanted to keep me busy while she looked after my baby brother. Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka kept me entertained, as well as Little Brown Bear, The Bobbsey Twins, and later, Nancy Drew.

Coming from a traditional Southern family, I didn’t receive encouragement to do anything with the stories I scribbled on notebook paper. A good marriage and being a proper Southern lady was the ideal.

How dull that seemed! I wanted adventure. To save the world. Somehow during that quest, I lost my way, fell in love, and got married. How did I become a manufacturer of lightweight concrete air-conditioner pads? A long story.

I never stopped writing. And when my kids were in school, I took some clas

Family lore says that she ran away from home and lived a dissolute life, disowned by her upright family. She died young, of unknown causes. I can see plenty of possibilities for a novel there, and one day I may write one.(less)

I'd have to say Scarlett O' Hara and Rhett Butler, hands down, and not just because I'm from Atlanta. They are both larger-than-life characters, a perfect match for each other, stubborn and proud, passionate and willful, courageous and determined. And they each have flaws that keep them from appreciating the other. In short, human.(less)

The Greatest Adventure

We were nine years old, my cousin and I, and on a sunny June day in middle Georgia we perched on the cool marble steps of the Carnegie Library, books stacked beside us, waiting for my mother to come for us. We had joined the Summer Reading Club and wanted to fill our lists.

My cousin gazed back into the peaceful interior where the librarian presided at her high desk. “I’d like to become a librarian Read more of this blog post »

“I am looking through a lace curtain at a dead man's feet. I am ten years old, the mist is rising on a fall morning in 1944 in Sawyer, Georgia, and I am standing on a front porch painted gray with white trim.”
Anne Lovett

“I didn't know then that the sweet life could be like honeysuckle smothering a barbed-wire fence.”
Anne Lovett, Rubies from Burma

“The wheel of fortune turns continuously, Duke told me. The first shall be last and the last shall be first. We like to talk about love being forever, and maybe on some level, love is. But the form of love changes as the wheel goes on.”
Anne Lovett, Rubies from Burma: A WWII Coming of Age Novel

“I didn't know then that the sweet life could be like honeysuckle smothering a barbed-wire fence.”
Anne Lovett, Rubies from Burma

“Anybody can look at a pretty girl and see a pretty girl. An artist can look at a pretty girl and see the old woman she will become. A better artist can look at an old woman and see the pretty girl that she used to be. But a great artist-a master-and that is what Auguste Rodin was-can look at an old woman, protray her exactly as she is...and force the viewer to see the pretty girl she used to be...and more than that, he can make anyone with the sensitivity of an armadillo, or even you, see that this lovely young girl is still alive, not old and ugly at all, but simply prisoned inside her ruined body. He can make you feel the quiet, endless tragedy that there was never a girl born who ever grew older than eighteen in her heart...no matter what the merciless hours have done to her. Look at her, Ben. Growing old doesn't matter to you and me; we were never meant to be admired-but it does to them.”
Robert Heinlein

“A prude is a person who thinks that his own rules of propriety are natural laws.”
Robert A. Heinlein
