I think Deighton did an extraordinary job describing the couple: Bernard, the field agent, and Fiona, the MI6 administrator who abandons family and friends to be a double agent working in Berlin for her boss Bret Renssalaer. I was particularly impressed by Deighton's character descriptions.

I am afraid I don't have a favourite couple in the novels I read, but the characters in Deighton's work are extremely well drawn.(less)

This is a great story and generally well done, but it is often confusing as characters come and go and disappear. This is another novelist who needs to hire an editor so the reader is not constantly confused.

I enjoyed the novel, but I had trouble following the story. Too many characters and incidents, and the it is very long for a crime novel. When you get disconnected, and you forget who is who, then it no longer works for you.
