I would have to say I have several favorite fictional couples:
1/ Leopold and Molly Bloom of Joyce's Ulysses because despite the fact we never see them together, they are such well-developed characters and Molly's monologue in Episode 18 "Penelope" is one of the most beautiful chapter I have ever read.
2/ Kit Traverse and Dahlia Rideout in Against the Day by Thomas Pynchon because I was totally jealous of Kit and crazy about Dahlia and loved how Pynchon wrote their stories. I took a lot of inspiration from this book (and all of Pynchon's work) in writing Sophie's Playlist.
3/ Mickey Sabbath and Drenka in Sabbath's Theater by Philip Roth because despite their depravity, there was true love between them and probably was the only true love that either of these characters ever truly gave and received.
4/ Jay Gatsby and Daisy Fay Buchanon in The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald because no list of couples would not be complete without that of the fatal encounter between the Great Gatsby and his literal femme fatale, Daisy. (less)

The writing styles of Pynchon and Roth among others helped me in structuring the narrative and using my own story somewhat distorted helped me find my voice. Gothic Grandeur: The Role of Monasteries in the Evolution of Medieval Architecture

Introduction

The Gothic era of architecture, which flourished between the 12th and 16th centuries, marked a transformative period in European history. Characterized by towering cathedrals, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, Gothic architecture was not just an expression of structural ingenuity but also a reflection of deep spiritual values. While the Church was the dominant patro

Making Connections: 5110. - SOPHIE'S PLAYLIST (The Gramble Chronicles I) by Michael Finocchiaro 1 14 Jan 13, 2018 07:43PM
“I believe that words uttered in passion contain a greater living truth than do those words which express thoughts rationally conceived. It is blood that moves the body. Words are not meant to stir the air only: they are capable of moving greater things.”
Natsume Soseki, Kokoro

“You seem to be under the impression that there is a special breed of bad humans. There is no such thing as a stereotype bad man in this world. Under normal conditions, everybody is more or less good, or, at least, ordinary. But tempt them, and they may suddenly change. That is what is so frightening about men.”
Natsume Soseki, Kokoro

“I do not want your admiration now, because I do not want your insults in the future. I bear with my loneliness now, in order to avoid greater loneliness in the years ahead. You see, loneliness is the price we have to pay for being born in this modern age, so full of freedom, independence, and our own egotistical selves.”
Natsume Sōseki, Kokoro

“It is painfully easy to define human beings. They are beings who, for no good reason at all, create their own unnecessary suffering.”
Natsume Sōseki, I am a Cat III

“Living as I do with human beings, the more that I observe them, the more I am forced to conclude that they are selfish.”

Michael Finocchiaro Hey Peter,
Actually, I read Bovary in French but Orgy and Bad Girl in English. They were fucking amazing. Thanks for the compliments. I am sort of between careers and have had the time to feed my reading obsession - lucky me! Aside from being trolled occasionally here on GR, enjoying the tracking of my reading and gathering other input into my reviews.
Sorry for the late reply but I never got a notification of your comment via GR :(

message 69: by Peter

Peter Warshaw Fino!

Dude, you crack me up!

So, you decide that you are gonna read The Bad Girl. But you feel that due diligence first requires that you read The Perpetual Orgy, which in turn then shoulders you with the obligation not of merely reading Madame Bovary, but REREADING Madame Bovary! The Herculean effort of it all…where DO you find the time? Are you retired? Oh, and by the way, did you then, just to add to your effort, read the Flaubert in French and the Llosa in Spanish!? LOL! (I have not, by the way, forgotten that you told me that you do, in fact, read in French, so I am only half-joking. Do you read in Spanish as well?)

The closest that I ever came to this kind of (enjoyable) self-flagellation does not even compare in intensity but is, I think, a fun anecdote.

When the Royal Shakespeare Company came to NYC to perform, I went to see them. In addition to Shakespeare they played Cyrano de Bergerac. (I believe – not totally sure, though – that it was Derek Jacobi, whom I adore as an actor, in the lead role.) Apparently the RSC was not sufficiently impressed, however, with the Brain Hooker(?) translation which had up until that time been used almost exclusively for English-language productions of Cyrano, and so hired none other than Anthony Burgess (who, until that time, was unknown to me as other than a novelist) to retranslate it.

So, before going to see the play I read the Hooker and the Burgess translations. Preferred the latter.

Sadly, I have just learned (today!) that Burgess did major edits to his own translation, and that both his original translation and the re-edited version are out as books. Shit. That means that I have one more to read that I was unaware of!

Anyway, the due diligence of reading two Cyranos – both rather short if I remember correctly – pales in comparison to lining up Madame Bovary, The Perpetual Orgy, and The Bad Girl as a “trilogy”. You are making me look very, very bad, sir! Keep it up. I now have all three of the above books on my “To Read” list! Thank you.

Peter
