A few years ago the owner told me of a dead body that had been found concealed in an old barn a few miles away. A search group on horseback, looking for the missing man, had discovered the body. That fired my imagination, and before long I was creating the characters and back story that led to that moment. (less)

Misty Morning

A misty morning here on the ranch takes me back to the Amazon aboard the Itapuranga, and to the short story, "Brazilian Moon," that came from that trip. A brief passage from the story follows:

At night on the upper deck, the bright stars seem close at hand. The wind is fresh off the water, the jungle a dark background. Laura sees the occasional light of a small boat in the black vastness.
