Thus, the most useful strategy I have found is to go back and do more research. Sometimes the additional information makes me even more confused--but only temporarily. At a certain point, it all settles into place and more or less starts to write itself.

Here's the answer I posted yesterday: Thanks for writing and I am very glad to hear that you are enjoying the book. I think this is the sentence (on p. 658) in question: "Other future legendary names who passed through Fox Film during this time with scant appreciation included Humphrey Bogart, who made his film debut in A Devil with Women (1930), inexplicably teamed with Victor McLaglen as a comedy act; Spencer Tracy; Jeanette MacDonald; Joel McCrea; and three former vaudeville comedians then called the “Racketeers”—brothers Moe and Shemp Howard along with Larry Fine, who would soon achieve success elsewhere as the Three Stooges." I could have written that sentence more clearly. What I meant was that Bogart and McLaglen appeared in "A Devil with Women," and that the others stars subsequently mentioned starred in other Fox movies at the time. Sorry for the confusion!

So, I didn't mean that the Stooges were in "A Devil with Women," but that they appeared in another Fox movie in this time frame.

Early review from Publishers Weekly

Thanks to Publishers Weekly for the recent advance review of The Man Who Made the Movies.

An excerpt:

"While the story of [William Fox's] fall from grace is dramatic, his rise is just as fascinating...Whether Krefft is describing how Fox built his studio, ushered in the talkies, or weathered a litany of troubles—bankruptcy, jail time for trying to bribe a judge, and poor health—in his later years, h Read more of this blog post »

Audition by Katie Kitamura
"Kitamura continues to write the same female narrator over and over again, but each book becomes increasingly mannered and pointless. There are only so many times you can read a woman’s over analysis of the constant “ambiguity” she sees in every situa" Read more of this review »

Audition by Katie Kitamura
"I really can't find one redeeming thing to say about this book. Kitamura was perhaps trying to capture the inherent deceit and performance of existence, but unfortunately the approach was not executed well. The two parts never connected in any meanin" Read more of this review »

Audition by Katie Kitamura
"A frustrating, high-concept piece of writing. It was beautifully-written and I appreciate it was clever, but it was not my cup of tea.

I was unfamiliar with Kitamura’s work going into this, which was likely an error on my part. Had I known the author " Read more of this review »
