Morgan Nikola-Wren began writing poetry for various literary periodicals in 2013. She is a winner of the Pangaea Worldwide Poetry Slam, 2016, and has published four books of poetry. Her debut book, Magic with Skin On, received a Goodreads Choice nomination for Best Poetry Book of 2017, and was featured in Barnes and Noble's "25 Must-Reads for National Poetry Month," alongside writers such as Maya Angelou and William Shakespeare. (Yeah. That's super weird for her, too.)

Never stop reading. Read anything you can get your hands on.

And, scary as it can be, ask for constructive criticism for people you know are going to flay your book alive...lovingly. An audience will always be there to read your book, so don't rush for the sake of having something out there. (My first book was put out over five years after I decided that I would like to publish a collection of poetry.) Take the time to ensure you are putting forth a quality work that is as good as you can possibly make it.(less)

No matter what. Some of my favorite things I've written have been things that came to me on days that I really didn't want to write, but made myself do so anyways. Often, writer's block comes when you're scared to write something, or when you think what you have in your head is no good. Tell that voice to go fly a kite, and then put words to the "not good enough" bits anyways. And while you're at it, explore why exactly you think they aren't good enough. And write that down, too. Often the stuff that scares you is the really good stuff. Seriously, if you're terrified to write it, you're off to a good start.(less)

MAGIC WITH SKIN ON IS A GOODREADS CHOICE NOMINEE

You guys are all awesome beyond words! Thank you so much for writing in votes and getting my baby up there with some of the greatest poets today! I cannot even begin to thank you enough but I'm going to try to. This is happening because of you.

Remember to vote each round, and to remember you make a difference, whether it's in making a highly eccentric writer feel like maybe she wasn't crazy to th Read more of this blog post »

“Even now, she cannot stop searching for a way out of her skin and into a life that fits all her fire.”
Morgan Nikola-Wren, Magic with Skin On

“...and it will never be as easy as you hope, but you'll find it is rarely as hard as you fear.”
Morgan Nikola-Wren, My Dearest Hurricane: Love and Things that Looked like It

“to the devil with learning to dance in the rain i laced tempests through my bones swallowed all the lightning that bit at my boldness, then called down my own personal chorus of thunder, so every storm that came my way knew straightaway i wasn't going quietly”

Catherynne M. Valente, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making

“Even if you’ve taken off every stitch of clothing, you still have your secrets, your history, your true name. It’s hard to be really naked. You have to work hard at it. Just getting into a bath isn’t being naked, not really. It’s just showing skin.”
Catherynne M. Valente, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making

“Such lonely, lost things you find on your way. It would be easier, if you were the only one lost. But lost children always find each other, in the dark, in the cold. It is as though they are magnetized and can only attract their like. How I would like to lead you to brave, stalwart friends who would protect you and play games with dice and teach you delightful songs that have no sad endings. If you would only leave cages locked and turn away from unloved Wyverns, you could stay Heartless.”
