I write stories that explore the thrills – and challenges – of falling in love as a woman-loving woman, including the bestselling Lakeside Hospital medical romance series and Rainbow Award honorable mention The Rules of Love.

My books are for you if you’re a fan of contemporary romance, if you love strong women who aren’t afraid to be vulnerable, and if you like a little heat with your sapphic love stories.

I would have loved to book club this novel... I have so many thoughts and feelings about this book.

The style was definitely interesting - I was so confused by the nightmarish quality of the opening chapter in the department store, until I did a little digging into Highsmith's other works and discovered that this book is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to her genre and style preferences. I enjoyed the Kerouac-meets-Lovecraft vibe, but on the other hand I must confess I also found it tedious at times - I like the beat generation but I also sometimes wish they wouldn't meander as much as they do!

As for the story and the ending, again, mixed feelings. I can't discount the historical significance of a happy ending for Carol and Therese, but I also can't help thinking that their relationship is probably not going to be the most healthy thing in the world. Carol has so much on her plate throughout this story, and Therese is just discovering who she is. Neither of those point to a solid foundation on which to build a relationship, but I guess we can extrapolate out to a time when Carol's demons are slain and Therese is confident in her identity, and the two of them are happy together.

“In the art of marriage, the little things are the big things. It is never being too old to hold hands. It is remembering to say I love you at least once each day...”
Cara Malone, The Complete Lakeside Hospital Series: Five Steamy Sapphic Medical Romances

“What am I, the official wingman of the Fox County lesbian community?” Tom asked. “This is three times now, you know.”
Cara Malone, Dark Skies

“Oh, and as far as being an adult goes, just keep in mind that age has nothing to do with it. We’re all fucking scared and confused.”
Cara Malone, Sleepwalking

“Cut the ending. Revise the script. The man of her dreams is a girl.”
Julie Anne Peters, Keeping You a Secret

“The only queer people are those who don't love anybody.”
Rita Mae Brown

“The single best thing about coming out of the closet is that nobody can insult you by telling you what you've just told them.”
Rachel Maddow

“Gay kids aren’t a “plot point” that you can play with. Gay kids are real, actual kids, teenagers, growing up into awesome adults, and they don’t have the books they need to reflect that. Growing up, my nose was constantly stuck in a book. Growing up as a lesbian, I was told over and over and over by the lack of gayness in said books that I did not exist. That I wasn’t important enough to tell stories about. That I was invisible. Why are we telling our kids this? Why are we telling them that they’re a minority, and they don’t deserve the same rights as straights, that they’re going to grow up in a world that despises them, that the intolerance of humanity will never change, that they’re worthless. It’s not true.”
Sarah Diemer

“No one has imagined us. We want to live like trees,
sycamores blazing through the sulfuric air,
dappled with scars, still exuberantly budding,
our animal passion rooted in the city.”
Adrienne Rich, The Dream of a Common Language
