Jason Pargin is a New York Times bestselling author who used to write under the pseudonym David Wong. His first novel, John Dies at the End, became a feature film in 2012. He is also the author of the Zoey Ashe series, currently in development for TV.

Jason was also the Executive Editor at Cracked.com from 2007 until 2020, when he left to become a full time novelist. He has a dog.

It's been a difficult couple of years but nothing about my experience is unique, some people close to me have gotten very sick and I've struggled to adjust to being a full-time author (it can be an extremely unhealthy job, as some famous authors of the past have demonstrated). But it would be crazy for me to complain in public when, at the end of the day, I'm getting paid a lot of money to stay at home and make up funny stories. (less)

Whenever they reveal the movie/album/no…moreI always avoid this question in interviews or Reddit AMAs because it bothers me when other creators answer it. Whenever they reveal the movie/album/novel of theirs they're most proud of, it's never my favorite, as a fan, and it makes me feel like I'm enjoying their work wrong. Or if they do the opposite, like if there's some song that changed my life as a teen and the lead singer does an interview like, "Oh, yeah, we were surprised that was a hit, that was just a throwaway track we added to the album at the last minute. Basically Steve came up with this guitar riff and I just made up some words, we recorded it in 20 minutes."

This may seem weird but just in general I'm really cautious about saying something about my own work that may make people enjoy it less, or make them feel like their interpretation of it was wrong. Even when talking about the process I try never to say things like, "Well I considered killing off this character but changed my mind" because I think the reader prefers to think of these stories as being "true" in the sense that they couldn't ever exist in another form, and it messes with that when you talk about what went into a specific decision etc. It kind of ruins the magic, I guess.

Usually instead of saying all that I'll just say something like, "They're all my favorites!" (less)

Jason Pargin answered Joan Wendland's question: Will there be another Zoey novel? Please say yes! I'd like to write another one, the soonest it could be out would probably 2028 as I'm currently writing the next JDATE book which is due at the end of next year and out in 2026 and ideally I'd have two years to write the next book after that (I only See Full Answer

“I have this theory, that everything that happens on our screens is designed to do exactly what’s happening here, to repel us from one another, to create a war of all against all. It’s like a filter that only shows you others’ bad behavior, blocking the pure and letting through the poison, to make you scared of everyone who isn’t exactly identical to you.
