I take great comfort and motivation reading that all writers struggle with "writer's block" and procrastination. Reading that everyone from Hemmingway to JK Rowling struggle with the same behaviors that I do.

I almost never get "writer's block" in the sense that I can't think of what to write. More often the problem is getting started and transforming the ideas from independent sentences into something complete and flowing. The problem is more one of procrastination - and even easier for me because I have other things to do in my professional life (teaching, researching, speaking, entrepreneurial projects).

The only thing that reliably works for me is a deadline that has either some kind of monetary penalty (not reward) - or if someone else (an editor or publisher) is waiting for a submission. Those work the best for me.
